Bandon, on the southwest Oregon coast, with all of its beauty throws more than its share of challenges at those who like to garden, especially for those gardeners whose property has any kind of sea exposure. Between the wild coastal storms, wind, rain, salt, and clay soils, we’ve met our match.

This is our website and database for keeping track of (and sharing) what works in our Bandon gardens and, sometimes, what doesn’t. Some of the plants are native species to the Pacific Northwest; some of them may come from places like Africa, Chile, Japan, China, and New Zealand. One thing you’ll notice about this list is that almost everything is evergreen. We intended it that way as we live in a mild climate and want green and color year around, spoiled plant lovers that we are! Many of the plants listed here can be grown in the Pacific Northwest — especially Southern Oregon and Northern California — and many other places as well.

The subject gardens of this web site are located two to three blocks off of Beach Loop Road and from the mighty Pacific Ocean. The plant selection is limited due to the above conditions, but we also like to experiment some so you’ll probably find varieties mentioned here that aren’t mentioned on other Bandon-related gardening and landscaping web sites and blogs. Many of the houses around here stick to growing three or four tried-and-true plants in their landscapes, which is fine, but that’s just not enough variety for us, I’m afraid. We’re also out to get rid of that “dead zone” reputation that Bandon has for growing plants!

So if you’re looking for information and advice on shrubs, trees, vines, grasses, herbs, edible and ornamental plants that grow in Bandon Oregon…come explore with us in our gardens by the sea! It is our hope that this website will help in designing and planning your own seaside garden. Many of these are first-year plants and the photos were taken in the fall of 2010, but we’ll try to update the plant images throughout all of the growing seasons so check back regularly.
